Singapore to Broome and home

By 6.30 AM, and having cleared customs and immigration we were calling Seletar Tower for start clearance and were off again. We had planned to leave at daybreak so that we could see Singapore but the morning was hazy and I was preoccupied with a heavy aircraft, hot morning and KL control asking me to expedite climb! Not what I really wanted to do as steep climbs send the engine temperatures up. Anyway a compromise was reached, then an interesting flight over more of Indonesia and out into the ocean for the long leg direct to Broome.

Over Indonesia heading for the long over water to Broome

For the first time in our trip we didn’t have a tail wind, but the headwind was only 7 to 10 knots so we were still motoring along well in economy setting at about 300KPH. This was the first leg where we didn’t lose 2 hours due to time zones so we landed at Broome at 4.30 Pm , lovely day, friendly customs and quarantine; it was good to be back in Australia . We filled up and were away to find our motel by 5.30 or so. A big steak at Matso’s, a couple of “blondes” (beers) and off to bed for a 4 o’clock wakeup and 4.30 (6.30 in NSW) takeoff

Our route direct to Orange was almost directly over Ayers rock so we descended and took photos, sent sms messages (that in my case didn’t send anyway) then on to Orange . The nearer we got the more out tailwind picked up, over 220 Knots for a long while. Brett was flying and it was good to sit with a pro, he doesn’t waste time but is safe and under control all the way. Arriving at 4 or so I met his family, after spending as much time with Brett as I had, I felt I already knew them very well! We packed up the plane, folded up the tank and I felt well and truly ready to head home to Port Macquarie. Brett had been great company and happy to share his extensive experience, I learned a lot.

I had a great trip home, I was on my own in the plane for the first time since I had bought it, it was lightly loaded and it went like a rocket. The climb is fantastic in the SR22 and soon I was cruising 9,500 ft at 180 Knots indicated, 220 knots (400Kph) ground speed. A great way to finish off a fantastic adventure. An hour and 10 later I was on the ground in Port Macquarie, glad to be home, but glad to have achieved what I had.
